Why this size

Why JPG is the safe choice

JPG is the format every portal, phone and email client opens. It keeps photos small by discarding detail your eye does not notice.

Photos saved from websites, WhatsApp and screenshots often arrive as WebP, PNG or HEIC. If a form says "JPG only", or a PNG photo is too large to upload, changing it to JPG almost always fixes it. Transparent areas become white, because JPG has no transparency.

Tips

Tips that make a difference

Convert from the original

Each conversion to a lossy format loses a little detail. Start from the best copy you have, not one that was already converted or sent through a chat app.

Need a smaller file as well?

After converting to JPG, compress the image to the KB your form or website allows. The format stays the same.

Avoid

Common problems and fixes

  • The form still says the file is too bigConverting does not set a file size. After converting, compress the JPG to the KB the form allows.
  • A transparent background turned whiteJPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas become white. Convert to PNG or WebP to keep them.
  • Text in a screenshot looks fuzzyJPG softens sharp edges a little. Keep screenshots and logos as PNG unless a form asks for JPG.

How the tool works

The image is decoded in your browser and saved again in the new format at a high quality setting. PNG and WebP keep transparent areas; JPG and GIF get a white background. A JPEG converted to JPG without a size limit keeps every byte and only changes the file name. Everything happens in your browser; your images are never uploaded.
