Why this size

What GIF is good for

GIF uses a palette of up to 256 colors. That suits simple graphics, icons and diagrams, and almost every app can display it.

For photos, GIF loses color detail and gets large, so use it only when a platform asks for GIF specifically.

Tips

Tips that make a difference

Convert from the original

Each conversion to a lossy format loses a little detail. Start from the best copy you have, not one that was already converted or sent through a chat app.

Need a smaller file as well?

After converting to GIF, compress the image to the KB your form or website allows. The format stays the same.

FAQ

Convert to GIF: questions

Can I make an animated GIF?
Not yet. Each image becomes a single-frame GIF.
Why do colors look different in the GIF?
GIF can hold only 256 colors, so photos with smooth gradients lose some shades. Graphics with flat colors look the same.
What happens to transparent areas?
They become white, which keeps the GIF looking the same in every app.
Can I convert many files at once?
Yes. Add up to 5 images at a time, or 50 with a free account, and download them as a ZIP.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Conversion runs in your browser, so your images never leave your device.

Checked

How we checked this page

Checked by the SizePort team on .

We test the tool with sample photos before it goes live and check that the sizes on this page match what it produces. Rules and platforms change, so if something here is out of date, tell us and we will correct it.

How the tool works

The image is decoded in your browser and saved again in the new format at a high quality setting. PNG and WebP keep transparent areas; JPG and GIF get a white background. A JPEG converted to JPG without a size limit keeps every byte and only changes the file name. Everything happens in your browser; your images are never uploaded.
