How to

How to make an Indian passport photo

  1. 1

    Take a front facing photo

Stand about 1.5 metres from the camera, in even light, against a plain wall. Take off your glasses and look straight at the lens.

  2. 2

    Check the crop

The tool finds your face and frames a close up of your head and the top of your shoulders. Drag the frame if your eyes sit off the guide line.

  3. 3

    Make the background white

One tap turns the wall behind you plain white. It runs on your device, so the photo is never uploaded.

  4. 4

    Download

    A 630 x 810 pixel JPG for the online form, or a 4x6 sheet of 35 x 45 mm prints.

Why this size

Indian passport photo size in 2026

The Ministry of External Affairs moved passport services at Indian embassies and consulates to Global Passport Seva Version 2.0. Since 1 December 2025, everyone applying abroad uploads their own photo with the online form. The photo guidelines the missions publish ask for a colour photo of 630 x 810 pixels on a white background, not altered by any software, showing a close up of the head and the top of the shoulders so that the face takes up 80 to 85 percent of the photo.

630 x 810 pixels is the 7:9 shape of the 35 x 45 mm passport photo used across the world under ICAO, the UN agency that sets the rules for travel documents. Printed, the same file gives a 35 x 45 mm photo, so one picture works for the upload and for paper forms.

Inside India it works differently: at a Passport Seva Kendra or a Post Office Passport Seva Kendra, your photo is taken at the counter during the appointment, so you do not bring one. This page is for applications and renewals abroad, and for any form that asks for a passport size photo.

Tips

Tips that make a difference

In India the PSK takes the photo

Booked an appointment at a Passport Seva Kendra or POPSK? You do not need a photo: it is taken at the counter. Make one here only for an application abroad or for other forms. Applying for OCI or an India e-Visa? The free passport photo checker has the rules for both.

Take off your glasses

The guidelines ask for no reflections on glasses and suggest taking them off. Without glasses, glare can never get your photo returned.

Head coverings only for religion

A head covering is allowed only for religious reasons, and your whole face must show, from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead and both edges.

Print at actual size

Set the printer to 100% or Actual size, not Fit to page. Otherwise the photo shrinks and no longer measures 35 x 45 mm.

Avoid

Why Indian passport photos get returned

  • Background not whiteA cream or grey wall is not white. Replace it here before you upload, or fix only the background of a photo you already have with the passport photo background editor.
  • Too far from the cameraThe face should fill most of the frame. The tool crops in close for you.
  • A retouched or filtered photoBeauty modes and filters count as altering the photo. Use the camera's normal mode.
  • Mouth open or a big smileKeep a natural expression with your mouth closed and both eyes open.
  • Shadows or red eyeFace a window or use soft light from the front. Avoid the flash.

FAQ

Indian Passport: questions

630 x 810 pixels for the photo you upload with a Global Passport Seva application abroad, on a white background. Printed, that is 35 x 45 mm, the standard passport size.

3.5 x 4.5 cm (35 x 45 mm). The 630 x 810 pixel file this page makes prints at exactly that size.

No. At a Passport Seva Kendra or a Post Office Passport Seva Kendra the photo is taken at the counter during your appointment.

Yes. Since 1 December 2025, applicants abroad upload an ICAO compliant photo, a scan of their signature and their documents with the Global Passport Seva form.

Plain white, with no shadows. The tool replaces any wall with white on your device.

Take them off. The guidelines say there must be no reflection on glasses and that they should be removed to avoid it.

Older embassy checklists for printed photos asked for 2 x 2 inches. The current online system asks for an uploaded 630 x 810 pixel photo. If your mission still wants a printed 2 x 2 inch photo, choose United States in the country list or use the US passport photo page: it makes that size on white.

No. Cropping, the white background and the resizing all happen in your browser.

How the tool works

A small face detection model (YuNet, about 230 KB) runs in your browser, finds your eyes and chin, and places the frame so the head fills the share of the height the country asks for. You can move the frame. The tool then crops to the country's shape, can replace the background with the on-device AI model, and resizes to the official size at 300 DPI. Where the country sets a file size range, it keeps the JPG inside it. Everything happens in your browser; your images are never uploaded.
