Why this size

Size of passport size photo in cm, inches and pixels

A passport size photo is 3.5 cm wide and 4.5 cm tall, which is 35 x 45 mm or about 1.38 x 1.77 inches. India, Pakistan, the UK, Australia and the Schengen countries all use it. At 300 DPI, the print standard, that is 413 x 531 pixels. In the Philippines the same size is sold as the passport size ID picture.

The shape matters as much as the size. The ratio of a passport size photo is 7:9, width to height, so any picture you scale for it has to keep that shape: 350 x 450, 413 x 531 or 700 x 900 pixels all work, while a square or a 3:4 phone photo has to be cropped first. This tool crops to 7:9 before it resizes, so nothing is stretched.

The size alone is not enough. Your head, from the chin to the top of the hair, should fill about 70 to 80 percent of the height, on a plain white or light background. The tool finds your face and places the frame so your head fills that share, with your eyes on the guide line, and you can still move it by hand.

Some countries use other sizes. The US asks for 2 x 2 inches (5.08 cm square) and Canada for 5 x 7 cm, while forms in Bangladesh often want the larger 4.5 x 5.5 cm. Pick the country and the tool switches the size, the background and the file limit for you.

Tips

Tips that make a difference

Pakistan: the online passport photo is 350 x 467 pixels

At a passport office in Pakistan the photo is taken at the counter, so you do not bring one. For DGI&P's online passport service (renewal, inland or overseas) the photo is a colour JPG of 350 x 467 pixels on a white background, up to 3 MB. Printed passport size photos for other Pakistani forms are 3.5 x 4.5 cm on white, which the Pakistan option makes.

Fix the background without resizing

Already have a photo at the right size with a grey or busy wall behind you? The passport photo background editor turns only the background white. For a small 2 x 2.5 cm photo box, make a stamp size photo instead.

Bangladesh often uses a bigger photo

For the e-passport, your photo is taken at the passport office. Many other forms in Bangladesh still ask for the older 4.5 x 5.5 cm (45 x 55 mm) passport size: choose Bangladesh in the list and the frame changes shape.

Print at actual size

Set the printer to 100% or Actual size, not Fit to page. Otherwise the photo shrinks and no longer measures 3.5 x 4.5 cm.

Avoid

Common mistakes that get photos rejected

  • Head too smallThe face should fill 70-80% of the height. Crop closer if there is a lot of wall above you.
  • Shadows on the wallStand a step away from the wall and face a window so the light falls on you, not behind you.
  • Wrong size for the countryA US 2 x 2 in photo is not valid for a 3.5 x 4.5 cm passport. Pick your country first.
  • Glasses or a tilted headMost offices want no glasses and a straight, neutral face looking at the camera.
  • Over-compressed fileBlocky pixels can fail automated checks. Stay above 30 KB if the form allows it.
  • Filters and beauty modesEdited skin, portrait blur or changed colors are not allowed on official photos.

FAQ

Passport Photo: questions

3.5 x 4.5 cm (width x height), which is 35 x 45 mm. India, Pakistan, the UK, Australia and the Schengen countries use it. The US is different: 2 x 2 inches, or 5.08 x 5.08 cm.

3.5 x 4.5 cm (35 x 45 mm) for printed photos on forms, on a white background. For an Indian passport applied for abroad, the uploaded photo is 630 x 810 pixels, which prints at the same 3.5 x 4.5 cm; the Indian passport photo page makes it. At a Passport Seva Kendra in India the photo is taken at the counter.

About 1.38 x 1.77 inches for the 3.5 x 4.5 cm photo. A US passport photo is exactly 2 x 2 inches.

413 x 531 pixels at 300 DPI, the print standard. Some online forms set their own pixel size, for example 600 x 600 pixels for a US photo. Pick the country and the tool uses the right one.

3.5 x 4.5 cm with a white background for printed photos, the same as India and the UK. For DGI&P's online passport renewal the photo is a 350 x 467 pixel colour JPG on white, up to 3 MB. At a passport office in Pakistan the photo is taken at the counter.

For the e-passport the photo is taken at the passport office, so you do not bring one. Other forms in Bangladesh often ask for the older 4.5 x 5.5 cm (45 x 55 mm) passport size. Choose Bangladesh in the list and the size changes for you.

7:9, width to height (3.5 : 4.5). A 413 x 531 or a 700 x 900 pixel photo has that ratio. A square photo or a 3:4 phone photo has to be cropped to 7:9 first, which this tool does for you.

Passport size ID pictures are 3.5 x 4.5 cm, about 1.38 x 1.77 inches. The DFA takes the photo for the passport itself at your appointment; the printed passport size is for school, job and government forms. Some of those forms ask for a square 1x1 picture or 2x2 picture instead, often with a name tag.

Open this page in your phone's browser, add a photo from the gallery or camera, crop it to the guide and download. No app is needed.

Width 3.5 cm and height 4.5 cm (35 x 45 mm), with your head filling about 70 to 80 percent of the height. India, Pakistan and the UK all use this measurement.

The 413 x 531 photo this page makes is usually 30 to 45 KB with a white background, already under 50 KB. If your form asks for less, compress the download to 20 KB. The size in cm stays the same.

The tool gets the size, the head position and the background right. It cannot fix uneven light, a shadow on one side of your face or a blurry photo, and offices reject those, so start from a sharp photo taken facing a window. For a US or UK passport, the free passport photo checker tests your photo against the official rules before you send it.

Yes. Download the 4x6 inch sheet with eight copies and print it on photo paper at 100% scale, or take the file to any photo shop.

No. Cropping, background replacement and resizing all run in your browser. Your photo never leaves your device.

How the tool works

A small face detection model (YuNet, about 230 KB) runs in your browser, finds your eyes and chin, and places the frame so the head fills the share of the height the country asks for. You can move the frame. The tool then crops to the country's shape, can replace the background with the on-device AI model, and resizes to the official size at 300 DPI. Where the country sets a file size range, it keeps the JPG inside it. Everything happens in your browser; your images are never uploaded.
