Why this size

Why do forms ask for photos under 20 KB?

Exam boards, job portals and government sites receive millions of uploads. A 20 KB cap keeps their servers fast and their records small, so the form rejects anything bigger.

A phone photo is usually 2-5 MB. Getting it under 20 KB needs smaller dimensions and lower quality, done carefully so the face stays clear. Crop to your head and shoulders first and the result looks noticeably better.

Use cases

When you need a 20 KB photo

Exam registration

Board, university and entry test forms that cap photos at a few KB. The exam kit knows the rules of the big exams.

Signature uploads

Scanned signatures that must stay between 10 and 20 KB; signature resize also crops them to 140 x 60 px.

Government ID forms

National ID, licence renewals and other strict portals.

Thumb impressions

Fingerprint scans for admission and recruitment forms.

Scholarship applications

Online applications with very small upload caps.

Slow connections

A photo that sends instantly, even on weak mobile data.

Tips

Tips that make a difference

Crop first

Cropping to just the face or document removes pixels you do not need, so the quality can stay higher.

Use JPG

JPG gets much smaller than PNG for photos. Use PNG only if the form asks for it.

Check the dimensions too

Some portals also require a size such as 3.5 x 4.5 cm or 200 x 230 px. Set both to avoid a second rejection: resize in cm or in pixels first, then compress.

Plain backgrounds compress better

A plain wall behind you leaves more of the 20 KB for your face.

Do not go far below the limit

A file that is much smaller than needed loses detail for nothing. Aim just under the limit.

Check the minimum too

Some forms also set a lower limit, such as 10 to 20 KB. A photo under the minimum is rejected as well.

FAQ

Compress to 20KB: questions

How do I compress an image to 20KB?
Add your photo above and download the result. The 20 KB target is already set: the tool lowers the JPG quality step by step, and the pixel size only if it must, until the file is just under 20 KB.
How do I reduce photo size to 20 KB on my phone?
Open this page in Chrome or Safari, tap to pick a photo or take a new one, then download. It works on Android and iPhone with nothing to install.
Can I compress a photo from MB to 20 KB?
Yes. Phone photos are usually 2 to 5 MB, about 2,000 to 5,000 KB (the MB to KB converter explains the units). The tool reduces the pixel size as well as the quality when it has to, so even a large photo gets under 20 KB.
Will my photo look blurry?
At 20 KB a passport style photo or signature stays clear. Group photos and landscapes lose more detail, so crop them first.
Can I make it exactly 20 KB?
The result lands just under the limit, usually within a few percent of 20 KB, so the form never rejects it for being too big.
My form asks for 10 to 20 KB. What should I do?
Signatures and exam photos often have to be 10 to 20 KB. Compress here and the file lands just under 20 KB, inside the range. If your photo is already smaller than 10 KB, increase its size in KB instead.
How do I convert an image to JPG under 20KB?
Add a PNG, HEIC, WebP or JPG photo. The result is always a JPG just under 20 KB, so converting and compressing happen in one step.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. Compression runs in your browser on your own device. The photo never reaches our servers.
What format will I get?
A JPG. Almost every form accepts it, and it gives the smallest files for photos.

How we checked this page

Checked by the SizePort team on .

We test the tool with sample photos before it goes live and check that the sizes on this page match what it produces. Rules and platforms change, so if something here is out of date, tell us and we will correct it.

How the tool works

The compressor first lowers the JPG quality at full resolution, testing several settings until the file is just under the target. Only if quality alone cannot get there does it reduce the width and height, a little at a time. The result is a JPG. Everything happens in your browser; your images are never uploaded.
