Why this size

Why an AI upscaler looks better than resizing

Ordinary resizing only spreads the pixels you already have over a bigger area, so a small photo turns soft and blocky. An AI upscaler has learned what edges, hair, leaves, brick and text look like up close, and redraws them at the new size. Lines stay crisp, texture comes back, and the JPEG blocks of a compressed photo melt away.

This upscaler uses NERVE, an open model trained only on public domain photos, so the result is yours to use however you like. It runs on your own device: WebGPU makes it quick on recent phones and computers, and older browsers still get there on the processor.

It works best on photos that are small, soft or compressed: a picture saved from a chat, an old phone photo, a product shot from a website. It cannot invent detail that was never captured, so a photo that is badly out of focus will look cleaner, not brand new.

Tips

Tips that make a difference

Start from the original

Upscale the first copy you have, not a screenshot of it: every save adds blur and compression the model then has to clean up.

2x for print, 4x for small images

2x is usually enough to print a phone photo larger. Use 4x for thumbnails, icons and photos under 500 px.

Up to 16 megapixels

Browsers can save images up to about 16 megapixels, so 4x is offered for photos up to about 1000 x 1000 px and 2x up to about 2000 x 2000 px.

FAQ

AI Image Upscaler: questions

Use an AI upscaler rather than a plain resize. Drop the photo here, compare the result with the slider, and download it. The model redraws edges and texture at the new size instead of stretching pixels.

2x doubles the width and the height (four times the pixels); 4x multiplies both by four (sixteen times the pixels). Use 4x for very small images and 2x for photos that are already of a decent size.

No. The AI model downloads to your browser once (7 MB) and runs on your own device. Your photo never leaves it, and nothing is stored.

The free result is up to 1024 px on its long side, as many times as you like. HD keeps your photo's full resolution: 1 HD photo a month without an account, 3 a month with a free account, unlimited with Pro.

No. It sharpens what is in the photo and does not retouch, smooth or reshape faces. It is not a beauty filter.

They set how much the AI redraws. Auto first measures how sharp your photo is: a sharp photo is only cleaned up and stays natural, while a blurry one gets more detail rebuilt. Gentle always stays closest to your photo. Strong rebuilds the most, which helps very blurry photos but can make faces look less natural.

Yes. HD keeps the full resolution, so a 1500 x 1000 photo becomes 3000 x 2000 at 2x, enough for a sharp 10 x 6.7 inch print at 300 DPI. Use the DPI tool afterwards if your print shop asks for a DPI value.

JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and iPhone HEIC photos. Results are JPG, or PNG for images with a transparent background.

HD images are big and take longer to make. The free result has no limit; HD gives 1 a month without an account and 3 with a free one, and Pro makes it unlimited.

How the tool works

An open AI model, NERVE (Apache 2.0, trained only on public domain photos), downloads to your browser once (7 MB) and runs there with WebGPU, or on the processor where WebGPU is missing. First the tool measures how sharp your photo is. A sharp photo is given to the model at full detail and only cleaned up, with part of its own pixels kept so it stays natural; a soft or blurry one is given at a smaller size, where the model can rebuild the edges the blur hides. You can also choose Gentle or Strong yourself. The model works at four times the size in overlapping tiles, so any size works without seams, and its result is averaged down to the size you get. The model file is checked against its fingerprint before it runs. Faces are not retouched, and colours and light are left as they are. Everything happens in your browser; your images are never uploaded.
