Sharpen Image

Make a soft photo crisp without changing its size. The AI rebuilds edges and texture instead of adding the halos of an ordinary sharpen filter. Free up to 1024 px, HD at full resolution.

Why this size

Why AI sharpening looks better than a sharpen filter

A classic sharpen filter, the "unsharp mask" in most editors, makes the light side of every edge lighter and the dark side darker. A little looks crisp; a little more leaves bright halos around edges and turns grain into noise.

This tool sharpens differently. An AI model redraws the photo at four times the size, where it can rebuild real edges and texture, and the result is brought back to the original size. Edges get crisp without halos, and grain and JPEG blocks are cleaned up instead of exaggerated.

The photo keeps its size, so it fits wherever the original was going. Choose 2x or 4x in HD if you also want it bigger.

Tips

Tips that make a difference

Sharpen last

Crop and resize first, then sharpen: resizing after sharpening softens the photo again.

Soft is not the same as shaken

Soft photos sharpen very well. Photos with motion blur get clearer, but streaks from a moving camera do not disappear completely.

FAQ

Sharpen Image: questions

Drop it here. The sharpened version is made at once, at the same size, free up to 1024 px on the long side. HD keeps your full resolution.

A strong sharpen filter can, by adding halos and noise. This tool rebuilds edges with an AI model and cleans compression at the same time, so it does not.

No. HD keeps your photo's exact width and height; the free result does too, up to 1024 px on the long side. Choose 2x or 4x in HD if you want it bigger.

No. The AI model downloads to your browser once (7 MB) and runs on your own device. Your photo never leaves it, and nothing is stored.

The free result is up to 1024 px on its long side, as many times as you like. HD keeps your photo's full resolution: 1 HD photo a month without an account, 3 a month with a free account, unlimited with Pro.

No. It sharpens what is in the photo and does not retouch, smooth or reshape faces. It is not a beauty filter.

They set how much the AI redraws. Auto first measures how sharp your photo is: a sharp photo is only cleaned up and stays natural, while a blurry one gets more detail rebuilt. Gentle always stays closest to your photo. Strong rebuilds the most, which helps very blurry photos but can make faces look less natural.

How the tool works

An open AI model, NERVE (Apache 2.0, trained only on public domain photos), downloads to your browser once (7 MB) and runs there with WebGPU, or on the processor where WebGPU is missing. First the tool measures how sharp your photo is. A sharp photo is given to the model at full detail and only cleaned up, with part of its own pixels kept so it stays natural; a soft or blurry one is given at a smaller size, where the model can rebuild the edges the blur hides. You can also choose Gentle or Strong yourself. The model works at four times the size in overlapping tiles, so any size works without seams, and its result is averaged down to the size you get. The model file is checked against its fingerprint before it runs. Faces are not retouched, and colours and light are left as they are. Everything happens in your browser; your images are never uploaded.
