Why this size

When PNG is the right format

PNG is lossless: every pixel stays exactly as it is, which keeps text and sharp edges crisp. It also supports transparency, and this converter keeps transparent areas as they are.

The trade-off is size. A PNG photo is often five to ten times bigger than a JPG, so use PNG for screenshots, logos, graphics and images you will edit again, rather than camera photos.

Tips

Tips that make a difference

Convert from the original

Each conversion to a lossy format loses a little detail. Start from the best copy you have, not one that was already converted or sent through a chat app.

Need a smaller file as well?

After converting to PNG, compress the image to the KB your form or website allows. The format stays the same.

Avoid

Common problems and fixes

How we checked this page

We test the tool with sample photos before it goes live and check that the sizes on this page match what it produces. Rules and platforms change, so if something here is out of date, tell us and we will correct it.

How the tool works

The image is decoded in your browser and saved again in the new format at a high quality setting. PNG and WebP keep transparent areas; JPG and GIF get a white background. A JPEG converted to JPG without a size limit keeps every byte and only changes the file name. Everything happens in your browser; your images are never uploaded.
