Why this size

Why passport photos get rejected, and what the checker looks at

Most rejected passport photos fail on something small: the head a few millimetres too big, a shadow behind the ear, a slightly tilted chin, a smile with teeth, a background that is grey instead of white. Offices do not explain much; you just lose weeks and pay for new photos.

The checker measures what the officer looks at. It finds your face with an on device model, measures from your chin to the top of your hair, and compares it with the exact range the office publishes: 25 to 35 mm on a US 2 x 2 inch photo, 29 to 34 mm from chin to crown on a UK print, 50 to 69% of the height on a US visa file. It then checks that your head is level and facing the camera, that your eyes are open, your mouth is closed, the background is plain and light, the light is even, and the photo is sharp enough for the size.

It never edits your face or your background. Offices refuse retouched and AI changed photos, so the checker only crops and scales the camera's original, and tells you how to take a better one when something is off.

Tips

Tips that make a difference

Face a window

Soft daylight from in front of you lights both sides of your face evenly. A ceiling light from above leaves shadows under the eyes; a flash leaves bright spots.

Hold the camera at eye level, one big step away

Ask someone else to take it, or use a timer. A phone held at arm's length makes the nose look bigger and tilts the head.

Stand away from the wall

Half a metre in front of a plain white or light wall stops your shadow from falling behind you, which is one of the most common reasons for a rejection.

Do not use a filter or beauty mode

Offices refuse edited photos, and the US checks for AI changes. Use the camera's original photo, taken in the last 6 months (the last month for the UK).

Avoid

Why a passport photo is rejected, and the fix

  • Head too big or too smallStep back a little or come closer. The checker tells you which, and crops to the right size when there is room.
  • Shadow on the face or behind the headFace a window and stand half a metre in front of the wall.
  • Background not plain or not light enoughUse a plain white or light wall, with light on the wall too. The checker never paints over a background: offices refuse that.
  • Head tilted or turnedLook straight into the lens with your chin level and the camera at eye level.
  • Smile with teeth, or eyes half closedKeep a neutral face with the mouth closed and both eyes fully open.
  • Blurry or grainyHold the camera steady, tap your face to focus, and use more light.
  • GlassesTake them off. The US and the India e-Visa do not allow them; the UK only if you must wear them, and OCI only without glare.

FAQ

Passport Photo Checker: questions

The quick check is free and needs no account: it finds your face and checks your head size and position for the document you choose. Passport Pro adds the other 10 checks, the office's exact files, a report and the money back guarantee, for $5.99 per person ($3.99 in South Asia), paid once.

Yes. Choose US passport, or US visa for the DS-160, and it validates your photo against the State Department's rules. The free quick check measures your head, 1 to 1 3/8 inches on the 2 x 2 inch photo, and its position; Passport Pro checks the other 10 points and gives you what each application takes: a print sheet for a paper application, the checked original for online renewal, and a 600 x 600 pixel file for the DS-160. The US passport photo page lists every State Department rule.

Yes, this one. Choose UK passport, online or on paper, and the free quick check measures your head against the GOV.UK rule (29 to 34 mm from chin to crown on a print) in seconds, with nothing uploaded. GOV.UK's own service checks the photo again when you upload it, so checking here first saves a retake. The full UK passport photo rules have their own page.

The usual reasons are a head that is too big or too small, shadows on the face or behind the head, a background that is not plain and light, a tilted head, a smile with teeth, closed eyes, blur, glasses, or an edited photo. The checker looks for every one of these, and tells you how to fix it.

No. The face models run in your browser and the photo never leaves your device. Passport Pro saves only the results, the person's name and a fingerprint of each file it makes, so a rejection can be matched to the exact file.

US passport, paper application, US passport, online renewal, US visa (DS-160), UK passport, online application, UK passport, paper application, India e-Visa, OCI card. We add a document only when the office publishes its rules and accepts a photo you take yourself.

Canada needs a commercial photographer's stamp on the back of the photo, and Australia needs lab printed photos and advises against online services, so a home photo cannot pass there. Schengen visa rules differ by consulate, and most visa centres take the photo at the appointment. The free passport photo maker still makes these sizes.

Yes. GOV.UK crops the photo itself, so the checker does not crop it: it checks the framing, the light, the background and the detail of the camera's original, removes its hidden data such as the location, and gives you that file to upload.

If the office rejects a Passport Pro photo for a reason about the photo, such as the head size, background, light, shadows, expression or focus, send us the notice within 30 days of it (and 6 months of the download) and we refund you, or give you a free new person if you would rather take a new photo. The file you sent must be the one we made, unchanged. Reasons the check warned you about are not covered.

Each Passport Pro person gets 10 full checks and 3 final downloads within 60 days, so you can take a new photo if the first one fails.

Babies cannot hold a pose, and offices relax some rules for them (for example the eyes for babies under one). The checker uses the adult rules, so for a baby use the free baby passport photo tool and the office's own guidance.

No, on purpose. Passport offices refuse photos with a replaced or retouched background, so the checker never changes your face or your background. It only crops and scales the original, and tells you how to retake it if the background fails.

Checked

How we checked this page

Checked by the SizePort team on .

We compare every size and rule on this page with the official sources below, and test the tool with sample photos before it goes live. Rules and platforms change, so if something here is out of date, tell us and we will correct it.

How the tool works

Two open models from Google's MediaPipe (Apache 2.0) run in your browser on the CPU, so a photo gets the same result on every device: Face Landmarker maps 478 points of the face, its expression and its pose, and Selfie Segmentation finds which pixels are the person. The checker measures from the chin to the top of the hair, the eye line, the head's tilt and turn, the eyes and mouth, the background's brightness, colour and evenness, the light on each side of the face and the sharpness, and compares each number with the document's official rule. It only crops and scales the original; it never changes the face or the background. Everything happens in your browser; your images are never uploaded.
