Passport Photo for Infants and Babies

A passport photo for infants follows relaxed rules: in the US a baby's eyes may be closed, and in the UK babies under 1 do not need their eyes open. Lay your baby on a white sheet, take the photo from above and get the right size for the US (2 x 2 in), the UK (35 x 45 mm) and other countries.

Why this size

Passport photo for infants: the US and UK rules

Babies need a passport too, and the rules are relaxed for them. In the US, an infant's eyes may be fully or partly closed, but no other person may appear in the photo, so lay the baby on a white sheet or seat them in a car seat covered with a white sheet. In the UK, babies under 1 do not need their eyes open and children under 6 do not need to look straight at the camera or keep a plain expression. You may support the head with your hand, as long as the hand does not show.

Everything else still applies: a plain background with no shadows, the face clearly visible and the right size for the country. The tool crops to that size and replaces a wrinkled sheet or a busy background with an even color.

The full adult rules are on the US passport photo and UK passport photo pages. For a printed passport size photo of a baby for India or Pakistan, choose that country: 3.5 x 4.5 cm on white. If you already have a good photo and only the sheet behind your baby is creased or grey, the passport photo background editor makes it plain white without changing the size.

Tips

Tips that make a difference

Try the car seat

Cover a car seat with a white sheet and photograph your baby sitting up. It is often easier than lying down.

Take many shots

Babies move. Take a burst of photos in good light and pick the one with the face straight on.

Wrinkles and shadows

Switch on Replace background to turn a creased sheet into an even white or light grey.

FAQ

Baby Passport Photo: questions

Lay your baby on a plain white sheet in daylight, take the photo from straight above, then add it here, pick the country and crop to the guide.

In the US, infants may have their eyes fully or partly closed. In the UK, babies under 1 do not need their eyes open. Older children need their eyes open.

Not in the shot. The US allows no other person in the photo, and the UK allows a supporting hand only if it is not visible. Lay the baby down or use a car seat with a white sheet.

The same as for adults: 2 x 2 inches for a US passport and 35 x 45 mm for a UK passport. Pick the country and the tool sets it.

The size and plain background are the same as for adults. What changes: a US infant's eyes may be fully or partly closed, and UK babies under 1 do not need their eyes open; children under 6 in the UK need not look straight at the camera. No other person, hand, toy or dummy may show in the photo.

How we checked this page

How the tool works

A small face detection model (YuNet, about 230 KB) runs in your browser, finds your eyes and chin, and places the frame so the head fills the share of the height the country asks for. You can move the frame. The tool then crops to the country's shape, can replace the background with the on-device AI model, and resizes to the official size at 300 DPI. Where the country sets a file size range, it keeps the JPG inside it. Everything happens in your browser; your images are never uploaded.
