Why this size

Why websites use WebP

WebP produces files about 25 to 35% smaller than JPG at the same visual quality, and supports transparency like PNG.

That makes pages load faster and helps Core Web Vitals. Every modern browser shows WebP, though some upload forms and older apps still accept only JPG or PNG, so keep your originals.

Tips

Tips that make a difference

Convert from the original

Each conversion to a lossy format loses a little detail. Start from the best copy you have, not one that was already converted or sent through a chat app.

Need a smaller file as well?

After converting to WebP, compress the image to the KB your form or website allows. The format stays the same.

Avoid

Common problems and fixes

  • An upload form rejects the WebPMany forms still accept only JPG or PNG. Use WebP for websites and keep a JPG for forms.
  • The WebP is hardly smallerA JPG that was already heavily compressed has little left to save. Large, high quality originals shrink the most.
  • An animated GIF became a still imageEach image becomes a single frame.

How the tool works

The image is decoded in your browser and saved again in the new format at a high quality setting. PNG and WebP keep transparent areas; JPG and GIF get a white background. A JPEG converted to JPG without a size limit keeps every byte and only changes the file name. Everything happens in your browser; your images are never uploaded.
