Why this size

Why do forms ask for photos under 50 KB?

A 50 KB limit is common on job portals and visa systems. It is small enough to keep their databases lean but large enough for a clear head-and-shoulders photo.

Most phone photos are 40 to 100 times bigger than that. The tool lowers the JPG quality in small steps and only shrinks the dimensions when quality alone cannot reach 50 KB.

Tips

Tips that make a difference

  1. 1.

Crop first. Cropping to just the face or document removes pixels you do not need, so the quality can stay higher.

  2. 2.

Use JPG. JPG gets much smaller than PNG for photos. Use PNG only if the form asks for it.

  3. 3.

Check the dimensions too. Some portals also require a size such as 3.5 x 4.5 cm or 200 x 230 px. Set both to avoid a second rejection: resize in cm or in pixels first, then compress.

  4. 4.

Plain backgrounds compress better. A plain wall behind you leaves more of the 50 KB for your face.

  5. 5.

Check the minimum too. Some forms also set a lower limit, such as 20 to 50 KB. A photo under the minimum is rejected as well.

FAQ

Compress to 50KB: questions

How do I compress an image to 50KB?
Add your photo above and download the result. The 50 KB target is already set: the tool lowers the JPG quality step by step, and the pixel size only if it must, until the file is just under 50 KB.
How do I reduce photo size to 50 KB on my phone?
Open this page in Chrome or Safari, tap to pick a photo or take a new one, then download. It works on Android and iPhone with nothing to install.
Can I compress a photo from MB to 50 KB?
Yes. Phone photos are usually 2 to 5 MB, about 2,000 to 5,000 KB (the MB to KB converter explains the units). The tool reduces the pixel size as well as the quality when it has to, so even a large photo gets under 50 KB.
Will my photo look blurry?
No. At 50 KB most photos look the same as the original on screen.
Can I make it exactly 50 KB?
The result lands just under the limit, usually within a few percent of 50 KB, so the form never rejects it for being too big.
My form asks for 20 to 50 KB. What should I do?
Bank and job portals often ask for 20 to 50 KB. Compress here and the file lands just under 50 KB, inside the range. If your photo is already smaller than 20 KB, increase its size in KB instead.
How do I convert an image to JPG under 50KB?
Add a PNG, HEIC, WebP or JPG photo. The result is always a JPG just under 50 KB, so converting and compressing happen in one step.
My form wants a PDF under 50 KB, not a JPG. What do I do?
Use JPG to PDF under 50 KB: it turns one photo or several pages into one PDF under 50 KB. A PDF upload field rejects a JPG even when the size is right.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. Compression runs in your browser on your own device. The photo never reaches our servers.
What format will I get?
A JPG. Almost every form accepts it, and it gives the smallest files for photos.

How we checked this page

Checked by the SizePort team on .

We test the tool with sample photos before it goes live and check that the sizes on this page match what it produces. Rules and platforms change, so if something here is out of date, tell us and we will correct it.

How the tool works

The compressor first lowers the JPG quality at full resolution, testing several settings until the file is just under the target. Only if quality alone cannot get there does it reduce the width and height, a little at a time. The result is a JPG. Everything happens in your browser; your images are never uploaded.
