Why this size

JPG and JPEG are the same format

JPEG is the full name and JPG the short file extension from older Windows systems. The bytes inside are identical.

Some forms and older systems check the extension literally and want .jpeg, so this converter saves your file with .jpeg. If your form wants .jpg instead, use Convert to JPG or JPEG to JPG.

Tips

Tips that make a difference

Convert from the original

Each conversion to a lossy format loses a little detail. Start from the best copy you have, not one that was already converted or sent through a chat app.

Need a smaller file as well?

After converting to JPEG, compress the image to the KB your form or website allows. The format stays the same.

Avoid

Common problems and fixes

  • The form accepts only .jpgThis page saves .jpeg. Use JPEG to JPG, which keeps the photo and changes only the extension.
  • The file is still too bigConverting does not set a size. Compress the JPEG to the KB the form allows.
  • A transparent background turned whiteJPEG cannot store transparency. Use PNG or WebP when you need it.

How we checked this page

Checked by the SizePort team on .

We test the tool with sample photos before it goes live and check that the sizes on this page match what it produces. Rules and platforms change, so if something here is out of date, tell us and we will correct it.

How the tool works

The image is decoded in your browser and saved again in the new format at a high quality setting. PNG and WebP keep transparent areas; JPG and GIF get a white background. A JPEG converted to JPG without a size limit keeps every byte and only changes the file name. Everything happens in your browser; your images are never uploaded.
