Why this size

Why convert JPG to PNG

PNG is lossless. Once your image is a PNG, editing it, adding text or saving it again never adds new JPG blur, which makes PNG the better format for design work, screenshots and anything you will edit several times.

Converting does not bring back detail the JPG already lost, and it does not make the background transparent: a JPG has no transparency to keep. For a cut-out on a transparent background, use the background remover, which saves a PNG.

Tips

Tips that make a difference

Convert to PNG when

You need lossless quality for text, screenshots or further editing.

Keep JPG when

The file already works where you need it. Converting again never adds quality.

Convert a whole folder

Drop all your JPG files at once. Each one becomes a PNG with the same name, and you can download them together as a ZIP.

Avoid

Common problems and fixes

  • The PNG is much bigger than the JPGThat is normal: PNG is lossless. Use the PNG for editing and the JPG for sharing or uploading.
  • The background is not transparentA JPG has no transparency to keep. Use the background remover, which cuts out the subject and saves a transparent PNG.
  • The PNG is not sharperConverting stops further quality loss, but it cannot bring back detail the JPG already lost.

FAQ

JPG to PNG: questions

Does JPG to PNG conversion improve quality?
No. The PNG looks exactly like the JPG. It only stops further quality loss when you edit and save again.
Can I make the background transparent?
Not with a format change, because a JPG has no transparency. Use the background remover: it cuts out the subject and saves a transparent PNG.
Why is the PNG so much bigger?
PNG stores every pixel without lossy compression. A photo can grow five to ten times in size; that is normal.
Is there a file limit?
Up to 25 MB per image. Add up to 5 files at once, or 50 with a free account.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Conversion runs in your browser, so your images never leave your device.

We test the tool with sample photos before it goes live and check that the sizes on this page match what it produces. Rules and platforms change, so if something here is out of date, tell us and we will correct it.

How the tool works

The image is decoded in your browser and saved again in the new format at a high quality setting. PNG and WebP keep transparent areas; JPG and GIF get a white background. A JPEG converted to JPG without a size limit keeps every byte and only changes the file name. Everything happens in your browser; your images are never uploaded.
