Why this size

China visa photo rules from the Chinese consulate

The Chinese consulate's photo requirements ask for a colour photo 48 mm high and 33 mm wide, taken within the last six months, on a white background with no border. The head must be 15 to 22 mm wide and 28 to 33 mm tall. Face the camera with your full face showing, with no shadows and nothing over or under exposed.

Ordinary glasses are allowed, but not thick frames, tinted lenses or glasses with glare. A hat or other head covering is allowed only for religious reasons, and then it must not hide any part of the face.

When you apply, you upload the photo with the online form (COVA). Visa centres report that it takes a JPG from 354 x 472 to 420 x 560 pixels and from 40 to 120 KB. This tool makes a 385 x 560 pixel file inside both ranges, the exact 33:48 shape of the printed photo, so the same picture works online and on paper.

Tips

Tips that make a difference

  1. 1.

Thin frames or none. Glasses are allowed, but thick frames, tinted lenses and glare are not. Taking them off is the safest choice.

  2. 2.

Keep a print ready. Some visa centres also ask for a printed photo at the appointment. Download the print sheet with the same photo.

  3. 3.

Print at actual size. Set the printer to 100% or Actual size, not Fit to page. Otherwise the photo shrinks and no longer measures 33 x 48 mm.

Avoid

  • A file outside the form's limitsCOVA takes 40 to 120 KB. The download already fits, so upload it as it is.
  • Hair or a cap over the faceShow the full face, ears to chin. Head coverings only for religious reasons.

How we checked this page

We compare every size and rule on this page with the official sources below, and test the tool with sample photos before it goes live. Rules and platforms change, so if something here is out of date, tell us and we will correct it.

How the tool works

A small face detection model (YuNet, about 230 KB) runs in your browser, finds your eyes and chin, and places the frame so the head fills the share of the height the country asks for. You can move the frame. The tool then crops to the country's shape, can replace the background with the on-device AI model, and resizes to the official size at 300 DPI. Where the country sets a file size range, it keeps the JPG inside it. Everything happens in your browser; your images are never uploaded.
